Louisville, Kentucky
The Harmony Building aspires to offer a fundamental change in how we approach architectural materials and systems based on the core belief from HRH Prince Charles that We Are Nature, we don’t merely extract from it, but can actually have agency in creating ecosystems that improve our own human health. Like nature, the Harmony Building aims to be alive; a constantly adapting ecosystem that harnesses nature’s long-refined technologies to clean our urban air, water, and soil. The building will breathe. The building will grow. The building will weep. The building will foster life, on its roofs, on its facades and in its rooms. The soil that supports this life will filter the air we breathe and the water we drink. The rich biodiversity of plants, animals, and microbes, that the world has been gifted, and we wholly rely on, will once again be brought back to the city, to restore the balance of our physiological and psychological health.

Interior lights will dim, in response to conserve energy resources and provide more of the sun's light into the building.

From particulate matter to CO2, the system will read and control the flow of air filtration to continually monitor air quality levels.

Geothermal units will be organized in a central area to maximize efficiency of heating and cooling production within the building's spaces

Advanced filtration will allow for the reuse of captured water for both the building's features and landscape.

The building will integrate advanced mechanical bio-based media and design, using plants and soil to enhance interior air quality.

Composting technology will be integrated into the building to break down compostable waste on site.

The new eastern addition to the Harmony Building will unfold from the historic building in a cascade of terraces inspired by the forms and ecology of the Ohio River bluffs. Clean water will flow and filter along the exterior facade of the building. As the exterior trees and plants age, the form of the facade will change with the seasons and grow overtime; evolving into a building that is part of our ecosystem.
The Harmony Building will be the first WELL certified project in Kentucky. It will be a leading model of how the built environment can improve the health of it’s occupants.
An Urban Laboratory to Explore the Principles of Harmony & Health
Located at the corner of W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. and 5th St., in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky, the Harmony Campus is comprised of four distinct, yet connected spaces: (1) the Cathedral of the Assumption, (2) Center for Interfaith Relations, (3) Philanthropy Corner, (4) Harmony Building, and (5) George Garvin Brown Garden. The Harmony Campus will be a living, breathing statement about health and how to create, and foster well-being.
Each of these spaces demonstrate how built environments can work in unison to create a truly innovative and harmonious space, linking nature, health, and the community. The Campus will invite nature into the heart of our city, highlighting design that works with our air, water, and soil to support human health.
